Cite using Oxford

Comment

  • Printed copy or e-book?: Follow the instructions below, whether it is a printed book or an e-book. But for e-books, remember to add the URL or the name of the database where you read the book online. If it were a different format, e.g. daisy or kindle, you can write the format instead of URL.
  • Missing page number?: If page numbers are missing, you can refer to the section title or chapter. If possible, however, you should try to find a version of the book with page numbers.

In the footnote, include this information in the following order:

First name Surname, Title, Edition (Place of publication: Publisher, year of publication), page number.  

  • The book’s author/editor
  • Book title (in italics)
  • Edition (if more than the first edition)
  • Place of publication
  • Publisher
  • Year of publication (if the date is not known, write n.d. for ‘no date’)
  • Page number you are citing/refering to.
  • If it is an electronic book, include the URL.

Shortened citation

After referring to a source using a full footnote, you can use an shortened footnote in future references to the same source.

The shortened footnote should include:  

  • Surname of the author(s) or editor(s) (If more than 4 authors, write et al. after the surname of the first author).
  • Title, without subheading (in italics).
  • Page number.

The reference list lists your sources in alphabetical order.

  • Volume or series (if available).
  • Place of publication.
  • Publisher Year of publication (if no date exists, write n.d.).
  • If it is an e-book, also include the URL or the name of the database where you read the book.
