Cite using Oxford

Comment

  • The instructions for book chapters apply to chapters in books by an editor, known as anthologies, where there are different authors for the chapters. If the same author has written all the chapters, you only refer to the book as a whole. Select Books in the menu to the left for more detailed instructions.
  • Printed copy or e-book?: Follow the instructions below, whether it is a printed book or an e-book. But for e-books, remember to add the URL or the name of the database where you read the book online. If it were a different format, e.g. daisy or kindle, you can write the format instead of URL.
  • Missing page number?: If page numbers are missing, you can refer to the section title or chapter. If possible, however, you should try to find a version of the book with page numbers.

In the shortened footnote, include this information in the following order:

Surname, "Chapter title." page number.  

  • Chapter author(s). If more than 4 authors, use et al.
  • Chapter title, no subheading, within quotation marks.
