Formatting your thesis in Word

This guide is primarily intended for those who use the Library's thesis templates in Word, but may also be useful for those who have chosen not to use the templates.

Every time I open the document, the numbering of my headings disappears. How do I get the numbering back?

The style sheet is pre-set so that no heading numbers are displayed. Go to Tools→Templates and Extensions.... Uncheck ‘Automatically update document style sheets’.

Only a small part of my inserted image is displayed; the rest of the image is behind the text. How can I show the whole image?

The Standard paragraph style specifies a line height of exactly 13 points. In other words, only 13 points (4.5 mm) of the image can be displayed. Select the Aspect Ratio paragraph style on the line where you want to put the image. Aspect ratio uses simple line spacing instead of exact line spacing.

Why do my images only appear as empty squares?

The image placeholder option is ticked to make the document easier to manage. Go to Tools→Options...→View and untick the ‘image placeholder’ option.

Why can't I edit the image?

The image cannot be edited when using image placeholders instead of the actual image. Go to Tools→Options...→View and untick the ‘image placeholder’ option.

When I transfer text from another document, the footnote references change from numbers to characters. How do I get the numbers back?

Go to Insert→Reference→Footnotes and endnotes... or just Insert→Footnotes and endnotes... Change the number format from characters to numbers. Press ‘Apply’.
