Searching and Writing

Document your search

It is important to document your search so that you can remember how and where you searched and give others the possibility to review and reproduce your search.

You can document your search in a table where you specify:

  • the date of each search
  • the database and database provider
  • your search terms (both subject headings and keywords)
  • how the search terms have been combined with each other (Boolean operators)
  • the usage of filters (if you use any)
  • the number of results

You can also add comments in the search table, for example why you used quotation marks around a phrase or truncation for a certain term.

The documentation should be added as an appendix to your publication.
